Finding a Job During the COVID-19 Pandemic

COVID-19 Impact On Employment

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented wave of unemployment across the United States. Since March, the national unemployment rate climbed from 3% to 15%, resulting in over 40 million jobless claims.

This devastating impact on the economy has directly affected the job market. Due to work stoppages and closed businesses, fewer employers are actively looking to hire. The popular job site Indeed.com is currently hosting 50% fewer job openings than they listed in January.

With the vast numbers of candidates outnumbering the number of open positions, you need to be on top of your game.

Get Smart About Your Job Search

Given the scarce number of employment prospects, it is more important than ever to gain every advantage you can. Using LinkedIn to power your job search is the key to finding the right opportunities while showcasing your strengths and abilities to recruiters and hiring managers.

Here are the three ways you can use LinkedIn to maximize the effectiveness of your job search that we’ll be covering in this article and in a future article:

Creating A Great LinkedIn Profile

Your LinkedIn Profile is your personal brand. Rather than simply reformatting your resume, consider what is important to a hiring manager. Every element in your profile should position you as the ideal candidate.

Hiring decision-makers want to know two things:

  1. What have you done?
Describe your work in terms that someone outside your organization will understand. Wherever possible, use industry-standard terminology and job titles, rather than company-specific language.
  2. What do you do well?
Quantifiable measures of success or responsibility are the best way to answer this question. For example, a hiring sales manager is more likely to be impressed that you “Exceeded sales quota in 2016, 2018, and 2019,” than you “successfully managed the North Central Territory.” You can always find ways to quantify your success and responsibilities.
